New Delhi. Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar addressed the issue of Indian nationals being deported from the United States during a session in Rajya Sabha. Jaishankar clarified that the deportation process is not new but has been in practice for many years. He stated that it is the responsibility of all countries to ensure that their nationals who are found residing illegally abroad are brought back to their home countries.
In response to the deportation of 104 Indians from the US, Jaishankar explained that the deportations are carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency of the United States. He noted that the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for deportation, effective since 2012, includes provisions for discretion, especially in cases involving women and children. He assured that the Indian government is in talks with the US to ensure that deported individuals are not subjected to any mistreatment.
