SGPC Protests Stall 'Emergency' Release in Punjab, Limited Screenings Across Cities

Chandigarh. Kangana Ranaut's political drama Emergency, centered on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the 21-month period of Emergency (1975-1977), faced significant resistance in Punjab on its release day. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) staged protests outside cinemas in multiple cities, citing alleged misrepresentation of the Sikh community and concerns over the film's portrayal of historical events.

As a result, the film was not screened in major cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala, and Bathinda. Heightened police presence was noted outside malls and cinemas across the state, as the protests led to limited screenings despite the nationwide release. The film had already been delayed due to controversies surrounding its censor certification.
