New York : India has reiterated its commitment to revitalizing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), emphasizing the importance of its reform to enhance global governance and address pressing international challenges. Speaking at a thematic debate under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the General Assembly, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, outlined key steps for the assembly’s revival.
India’s Vision for UNGA
During his address, Ambassador Harish reaffirmed India's pledge to collaborate constructively and strategically with all member nations. He underscored the universal and intergovernmental nature of the UNGA, emphasizing its unique status as the closest approximation to a global parliament.
UNGA’s Role as a Global Policy Platform
India's Permanent Mission to the UN shared a video of Harish’s speech on its official X account, highlighting key takeaways. Harish noted,
“India has consistently recognized the UNGA's unparalleled position within the United Nations system. Its universal and intergovernmental character distinguishes it as a cornerstone of global policymaking. Sovereign equality and inclusivity define its identity, and it is vital to honor both its literal and symbolic stature as the principal policymaking body.”
The Need for Revitalization
Harish emphasized that the effectiveness of the UN in addressing global crises, particularly ongoing conflicts and violence, relies heavily on a revitalized General Assembly. He stressed the urgent need to enhance multilateralism and the UNGA's capacity to meet global expectations.
“We live in an era marked by strife and conflict across various regions. The burden on the UN to address these challenges is immense. The efficacy of multilateralism hinges on the UN’s ability to deliver on these expectations,” Harish added.
India’s Commitment to Multilateralism
India reaffirmed its readiness to work collectively with the global community in navigating complex global challenges. Harish highlighted that a stronger, reformed UNGA is crucial for fostering international peace and advancing multilateral cooperation.
