Thimphu: Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, handed over a cheque of ₹250 crore to Bhutan’s Finance Minister Lyonpo Lekey Dorji on Wednesday. This marks the third installment of India's ₹1,500 crore commitment to Bhutan under the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP).

According to an official statement from the Indian Embassy in Bhutan, India has already provided ₹500 crore in two previous installments. The ESP was launched last year by the Royal Government of Bhutan to revitalize its domestic economy through strategic fiscal and monetary interventions in key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, cottage and small industries, tourism, startups, creative industries, and skill development. These initiatives aim to make a significant impact on the lives of Bhutanese citizens.

To ensure the effective execution of the program, Bhutan has established a dedicated secretariat for continuous review and monitoring. During his meeting with Finance Minister Dorji, Ambassador Dalela reaffirmed India's unwavering commitment to partnering with Bhutan in implementing its 13th Five-Year Plan, in alignment with Bhutan’s national development priorities.

India has been a consistent supporter of Bhutan's economic progress under its 'Neighbourhood First' policy. Expressing gratitude, Minister Dorji acknowledged India's steadfast financial assistance as a crucial factor in Bhutan's economic recovery efforts. He highlighted that India's support through the ESP has played a vital role in boosting economic activity and generating employment opportunities in the country.
