India Sends Vaccine Shipment to Nepal to Combat Anemia-Related Disorders

Kathmandu: In line with its "Neighbour First" policy, India has extended a helping hand to Nepal by sending essential vaccines aimed at combating anemia-related disorders, particularly sickle cell disease and thalassemia. The first batch of vaccines was handed over by India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, to Nepal's Minister of Health, Pradeep Poudel, on Friday.

The Indian government is providing Nepal with vaccines and medicines worth $20 million, following a formal request from the Nepalese government. The consignment includes vaccines for influenza (3,100 units), salmonella (1,550 units), meningococcal diseases (3,100 units), Haemophilus influenza (4,640 units), and Streptococcus pneumonia (4,640 units).

This generous initiative is expected to play a crucial role in Nepal’s efforts to manage inherited blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, which affect a significant number of people in the country. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu highlighted that this gesture would bolster Nepal’s healthcare sector and aid in the fight against these life-threatening conditions.

During the vaccine handover ceremony, Ambassador Srivastava emphasized the longstanding friendship between India and Nepal. He stressed India’s readiness to further strengthen the partnership in sectors of mutual interest, including health and welfare. "These vaccines will go a long way in improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from sickle cell and thalassemia in Nepal," he said.

On the other hand, Health Minister Pradeep Poudel acknowledged the positive impact that these vaccines would have on public health in Nepal. He expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for this generous support, which comes at a time when Nepal is focusing on improving its healthcare infrastructure. Minister Poudel reaffirmed Nepal's commitment to working closely with India in areas such as healthcare, further promoting progress and mutual development.
